Like many of his Classical and Romantic predecessors from the northern countries Heinz J. Düll has been caught up and ‘entrapped’ by Italy.
More than anything else it is the landcape that fascinates and inspires him, in particular the landscape embraced by southern Tuscany,northern Latium and Umbria. It is the common thread that runs through his drawings and watercolours, from Orvieto to Bolsena and as far as Todi.
The fruitful contrast of the steep rocks and cliffs set among the rich tapestry of vegetation inspire the artist. Other contrasts are discovered when the images grow out of nature; the architecture of castles, villas and palaces set against rural dwellings or the fantastic stone figures in the park of Bomarzo.
Impressions of the fleeting moment are captured in his watercolours: from afar-like an ethereal Morgan-le–Fay- Orvieto and the cathedral’s precious facade -and the evanescent visions of the islands of lake Bolsena.
In his smaller, intimate pictures of still life he makes reverence to the generous land of the South.In these pictures the brilliant reds, greens and yellows are the main subject, as though the artist is asking whether our world is in danger, or is itself a danger for what nature gives to us.
This haunting feeling represents the secret union of all the works of the artist. The remains of a glorious past are found on the margins of the drawings of landscape and architecture, a soft note is struck in these delicate watercolours that here and there awakens in us thoughts of the surreal. Not by chance can the scrap and rubble of the modern world be spotted among the baroque play of imagination. The landscape with which Heinz J. Düll comunicates through his works is that of a very ancient land, a witness of the destinies of the Etruscans, the Romans, the Barbarians, of Princes and their battles; it tells of the wealth of some and the misery of others.All this resounds in the pictures and gives them their depth.
